When you need to communicate the next play in football, you huddle. When you need to regroup, you call a timeout. It’s not all that different for a family when you think about it. Each day, there are plays to be made, problems to solve, and new ground to cover. Why not huddle? Try a Family POWER Meeting to layout your next winning game plan.
To be honest, sports is something I can take or leave. But hubby Steven is a huge fan. He played quarterback in high-school and has since loved coaching our kids. Recently, I asked him about the football huddle. I wanted to know what it was all about and what happens there. His eyes lit up (this is after all his jam!).
He proceeded to explain in great detail not just the purpose of the huddle, but the format, and the hierarchy—who stands where and why. Just as I was thinking, why did I want to know this again?, he said something that caught my full attention: “And that way everyone knows exactly what to do so that their next 4-8 seconds of play on the field is executed to the best of their abilities.”
Lightbulb moment.
Family POWER Meeting—part two
Right then and there, the dots connected. The huddle is about using communication and executing strategy to win! Football makes sense to me in that light. It’s like the Family POWER Meeting. It’s quick, energetic, and can keep every family member—or player on the team—fully involved in the game.
In this episode:
- Scheduled vs spontaneous. When to meet really depends on your purpose and outcomes you hope to achieve.
- Secrets for success. The goal is not to be perfect; rather strive to be purposeful. Listen for tips to set the tone and engage each family member.
- Look for improvements over time. There may be times when some members of the family are less willing to participate than others.
- Listen more than talk. Let each child and teen know that their opinion is valued and appreciated.
Episode challenge
Have a Family POWER Meeting this week. Think of it like a football huddle. Make sure everyone knows the purpose for meeting and what objectives you hope to accomplish. Maybe your family is feeling stuck and you need a boost to recharge. Or maybe you’re ready to work on building safer screen habits. Keep in mind, you don’t have to solve everything at once. It’s enough to get started.
