[4-8] Unrestricted Internet for Kids is Like Asking Little League to Compete Against Pros

Imagine your child’s little league team facing off against top NFL players. Ridiculous, right? A mismatch in every sense of the word. We would never allow it. It’s dangerous. It’s reckless. Our children would get hammered. They might never recover. Yet every day, children and teens enter an arena with just as many odds stacked against them. Unrestricted internet for kids is like asking Little League to compete against the Pros.

I’ve got a sports analogy for you today. I’m using my son’s experience of playing organized football for the first time to highlight the disadvantage children and young teens have as they try to navigate an internet that was not designed for their safety. But here’s the thing. With the right coaching and practice routine, this is a game we can win!

Unrestricted internet for kids

Our kids are growing up in a media-saturated world. We can’t change that fact. They are digital natives. But it doesn’t mean they are equipped to handle all the information coming at them.  However, we can help. We can coach them with a winning game strategy. In football speak. We teach them how to be the hammer.

In this episode:

  • Even the odds. How to level the playing field with kids and tech.
  • Coach and mentor. Setting clear boundaries, providing simple rules.
  • Drills and skills. Internist safety is an everyday conversation.
  • Being their #1 fan. Cheering kids on even when they fumble.

Compass challenge

This week, ask your child if they’d rather be the hammer or the nail when it comes to technology. (Hint: they want to be the hammer.) Discuss what it means to be the hammer and what it takes to not get tackled online. Ask your child to imagine little league players facing off against the pros. Get them to explain why this isn’t a smart idea. Bring it back to digital safety. Talk strategy together!
