[4-1] Establishing Direction in a Media-Saturated World

[4-1] Establishing Direction in a Media-Saturated World

Ever made what you thought was a great resolution only to be defeated before you start? Yup, you and me both. So what do we do? How can we resolve to build safer screen habits in our homes when we know we’ll face obstacles, challenges, and maybe even failure right at the outset?  It comes down to establishing direction.

Keep in mind that this is a journey. And every good journey requires a navigation tool. Something to move you in the right direction—like a compass or a map. Building Safer Screen Habits isn’t about passing or failing, winning or losing. It’s about recentering when you get off track. It’s about moving ever forward in the direction that you want to go.

Establishing direction

When I look back at what our family went through this past year, it shocks me how many big challenges we faced. Oh, we had good times too. But by year’s end, I felt deflated and directionless. On my friend Vauna Davis’s recommendation, I started to build a personal compass (a written document). The process has given me a renewed sense of direction. And I’m excited to share with you what I’ve learned. In fact, I have decided that direction is going to be a theme at Parents Aware for this coming year.

In this episode:

  • Navigating challenges. Experiencing a temporary loss of direction.
  • Recentering. The aim, mission, and direction of Parents Aware.
  • As the journey goes. “If you want to go far, go together.” —African proverb
  • Steady on. Building your own compass.

Compass challenge

Establish direction with this simple exercise. Answers the following questions either as an individual or together with your kids (preferred):

  • Who do I/we want to be?
  • What do I/we want to do?
  • What am I/we passionate about?

Don’t overthink your answers. You can write three sentences or a whole page. Create a word document of your answers. Print it out. Post it where it can be seen. This is the beginning of your compass! We will build upon it in upcoming episodes.
