Ever wonder how to talk to other parents about the threat of pornography? You started the conversation at home. That’s awesome! But you also know that it takes a village. It would be amazing to know you’re not alone; that others share your same worries and concerns. But how do you break the ice without clearing the room?
In this episode, I share not one but six ways to transition casual conversations to the topic of pornography. These tips are designed to help you talk openly with extended family, neighbors, and close friends. We know that pornography grows in the shadows. It thrives in secrecy. When we stay silent, it wreaks havoc on people’s lives. This is about shining a light on that threat.
Winning against the threat of pornography
Moving the conversation beyond the walls of our own homes can change culture. It can help build a brighter future for our kids. I believe that collectively we can make the greatest impact.
In this episode:
- Six easy transitions. Talking about the health and safety of kids online can become as natural as talking about the weather.
- People are interested. Watch ears perk up when new and relevant topics enter the conversation.
- Always be learning. People talk more when they feel they are being heard. Listen carefully and avoid giving unsolicited advice.
- Planting seeds. Not everyone is ready for this conversation. Respect the feelings of others. Allow time and space for ideas to grow.
Episode challenge
Start a conversation about the threat of pornography with a friend, neighbor, or extended family member. Use one of the six ideas from this episode or choose your own. But don’t stop there. When you’ve found someone that’s receptive, ask if you can come back to the conversation another time. Tell them you’re looking for an ally—someone that is willing to tackle the tough topics with you. Let them know that they’re an important part of your village.
