Root Out Pornography with Care, Attention, and Community Awareness

Root Out Pornography with Care, Attention, and Community Awareness

Dandelions. Clover. Weeds! Most agree that these invaders are to be eradicated from our lawns and gardens ASAP. If not they will spread and take over. Similarly, we want to root out pornography before it takes hold.

Today, Lisa Whitsitt and I are having a conversation about weeds and pornography. Lisa is our Director of Educational Outreach and is very involved in developing community connections for Parents Aware. She is also proactive in reaching out to government leaders to advocate for legislative change to protect children from online harms.

Root out pornography

As a concerned grandparent (11 times over), Lisa says she has become more aware of the challenges children and teens face growing up in today’s sexualized and media-saturated world. She says that when her own kids were young it felt awkward talking to them about intimacy or pornography. She now advocates for open conversation and is pleased to assist in sharing information and resources that help parents more comfortably navigate these important topics.

In this episode:

  • Intervene early and often. Parents Aware offers tools and strategies on how to root out pornography before it infiltrates your child’s life.
  • Learn all you can about tech. Not feeling terribly tech-savvy? Ask your kids (or grandkids!) for tech help. Get them to update you on their favorite apps and games.
  • Share information with kids. Find creative ways to have regular conversations about body safety, relationships, intimacy, and pornography.
  • Advocate for change. Call or send an email to your elected officials. Share your views, request changes to laws, or recommend new legislation.

Episode challenge

Listen to at least two different episodes of the Media Savvy Mom’s podcast this week. Put them on while out for a walk or doing routine chores (like pulling weeds from your lawn!). Choose at least one episode to share with a friend or other family member. Remember, the more we build community awareness, the more confidence we will all have to safely navigate this media-saturated world—and root out pornography!

Thanks for listening! If you enjoyed the show, please leave a positive review or tell a friend!
