[3-37] Dear Savvy: How can I avoid scaring my child with too much information?

TMI, too much information. It’s a real thing. And it can present real challenges when talking to kids about pornography. How do we balance the desire to protect children while preparing them with the information they need?

This episode is part of our #DearSavvy series. Sometimes you just want a quick answer to a burning question. These shorter episodes are designed to give you just that. Dear Savvy: I’m afraid talking about pornography will scare or scar my child. Where do I begin?

Dear Listener,

It’s so normal to have these concerns. Keep in mind the objective is not to cover everything in one conversation. Offering bite-sized pieces of information is so much better. Think about your child. What is their age and where are they developmentally? Frame your conversation accordingly. Start by asking a simple question. Their answers will help you know, what kind of information they need next.

In this episode:

  • Use familiar language. Begin with topics you and your child are comfortable with.
  • Clear, simple definitions. Older children can explain what they think pornography is.
  • Layered conversation. Bring with you a loving caring and attitude.
  • Sample starters. Three age-graduated ways to get you talking!
