When it comes to talking to kids about pornography, what’s better, boldness or bravery? The answer is YES! With a topic that takes most of us far outside our comfort zone, we need to gather all the strength we can muster.
A phrase I often repeat is: be bold, be brave, be honest. I believe these are the secret sauce ingredients to building, not just our own confidence around tricky topics like pornography, but also in opening the doors and getting our kids to engage in the conversation. All three are necessary. Today, we’ll focus on the first two.
Bold, brave conversations
Do you think of yourself as bold? What about brave? If you had to choose one of these to describe yourself, which one would it be? If you are like most, there are times when you don’t think of yourself as either. The truth is we all have braveness and boldness in us. Sometimes, we just have to work harder to coax it out.
In this episode:
- Bold communication. Share thoughts, values, and opinions openly.
- Brave conversations. Give kids a safe place to ask big questions.
- Bold precedes brave. Jump in before you feel ready.
- Braveness is cultivated. These conversations grow with our kids.
Episode challenge
Ask yourself the following questions. What makes you angry? (Think about porn targeting kids—that’ll get you going!) What do you love about this world that needs to be protected? What in this world needs to be corrected? When you have your answers (don’t overthink them!), what bold, brave action can you take to face what’s in front of you—to fight for what’s worth fighting for?
